The GIB and the Abitur are nearly identical as university entrance qualifications. The final examinations are centrally organized in both cases. The GIB is somewhat more challenging in its requirements for independent learning. The Abitur still allows students to obtain the college entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife) after completing 11th grade under certain conditions; this is not possible with the GIB. This means that it is mandatory for students to take their exam after 12th grade, which they can still repeat a maximum of two times. 24 points must be achieved as the minimum requirement level. This corresponds to a grade of 4.0, according to the German grading system. Achieving 45 points is the highest possible score in the GIB and corresponds to a grade of 1.0.
