Mid of October we visited the Fire Department in Doha. The excitement was already noticeable during the bus ride. Questions such as “Is the fire truck as red as in Germany?” showed the anticipation and curiosity of the children about the trip. A murmur was going through the bus when we arrived at the fire department because there were quite a lot of fire trucks outside and some fire fighters had just finished their exercise with a big turntable ladder.
After a warm welcome we were guided through the different rooms such as the emergency call center and explained what their function and meaning was. Additionally, children were shown which clothes a fire fighter had to wear such as a helmet and an oxygen cylinder. Children were even allowed to hold a gas mask in front of their face. They were also told how to behave in case of fire. It was also exciting to hear for them how a fire fighter needed to behave during an emergency and how quickly he must be in his fire truck. At the end children could be fire fighters themselves and could hold the huge fire hose. It was a successful and interesting event for all of us.
