On the one hand a great project came to an end with a ceremonial event at our school, on the other hand it was the prelude to the integration of the idea of a peace pole into the life of our school community.
After more than two years of the project, we were able to unveil the peace pole on the grounds of the German International School in the presence of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Qatar, Dr. Claudius Fischbach.
In view of the often man-made wars and crises to which we are exposed worldwide, this impulse hardly needs any more explanation; it must be lived. Thus, the words of our student representative Sarah were full of hope for many of those present: “Our wish is that people communicate the way we were taught as children: through words and not through violence. Together we want to work to achieve a sense of calm, comfort and peace.”
The school community had prepared for this day with the support of the IB® students, who had prepared the topic of “peaceful coexistence” in an age-appropriate way for all the kindergarten children and all the students.
