In our Year 4 ethics classes, we’ve been working on a very special project since the start of this school year: our personal ethics journal. Here, the children have the space to reflect on questions that don’t always have a straightforward right or wrong answer.
This month, among other things, we explored the question, “What does happiness mean to me?” This led to very personal, creative, and at times surprisingly profound thoughts and stories.
The Ethics Journal is intentionally designed as a space for reflection: The focus is not on perfect form, but on the courage to develop one’s own thoughts, put them into words, and express them through one’s own language and images. At the same time, the children learn that other people can think very differently about the same questions.
We’d like to share with you a small glimpse into the minds of our fourth graders and the very personal ways they’ve chosen to capture these thoughts in words and images.
