Der Bürger als Edelmann (Originaltitel: Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme) ist eine Ballettkomödie von Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin 1622–1673) und dem Komponisten Jean-Baptiste Lully, wohl das früheste amüsante Musical der Theatergeschichte.
Eine originelle Inszenierung der französischen Regisseurin Alice Safran, die mehr als 30 Leute, professionelle Schauspieler aus Paris und Musikamateure aus Doha, zusammenbringt.
Der wohlhabende Geschäftsmann Monsieur Jourdain möchte gern ein Adelsangehöriger werden, aber dazu fehlt ihm neben Herkunft und Titel auch die höfische Bildung.Als sich Jourdain in die Marquise Dorimène verliebt, beschließt er Versäumtes nachzuholen und einen Musiklehrer, einen Tanzlehrer, einen Fechtmeister und einen Philosophen anzustellen. Die Bekanntschaft mit der Marquise soll Dorante, ein verarmter Edelmann, vermitteln. Doch der ist selbst hinter der Schönen her und handelt im eigenen Interesse. Jourdains Tochter Lucille dagegen ist glücklich in Cléonte, einen gutbürgerlichen Kaufmann, verliebt, den sie wider den Willen des Vaters heiraten will…
Mit gnadenloser Komik stellt Molière in seiner gesellschaftlichen Satire die Überheblichkeit des neureichen Bürgertums an den Pranger.

La Compagnie du Théâtre de l’Oiseau Tonnerre implantée à Doha s’empare d’un classique pour en faire une comédie musicale jubilatoire, un spectacle complet avec des intermèdes musicaux et chorégraphiques.
Plus de 30 personnes participent à cette création originale, mise en scène par Alice Safran : 8 acteurs professionnels venus de Paris et une vingtaine de musiciens amateurs de différentes nationalités.
Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme est le portrait universel et satirique d’un nouveau riche qui rêve d’appartenir à la haute société. En quête de (re)connaissance et amoureux d’une belle marquise, il va tout mettre en œuvre pour acquérir bonnes manières et codes aristocratiques. A ses dépens, il finit non seulement par être manipulé par ceux qui profitent de sa niaiserie, mais encore par être déconsidéré par sa propre famille.

in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Heritage of the State of Qatar.
This year, the choice was to reach a large audience, with “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme”, a comedy by the
most famous French drama author, Molière. Whoever has studied or is studying French at school will
have read at least one text from Moliere, who lived at the glorious time of French King Louis XIV, “The
Solar King”, and soon entered under his protection.
The “Bourgeois Gentilhomme” is Monsieur Jourdain, a wealthy tradesman who wants to climb the
social ladder, from bourgeois to aristocracy, thus hiring tutors in music, dancing and fencing in order
to acquire gentlemanly polish. He’s delightfully funny because he’s naïve with some craziness. His
affections end up being absurd to everyone but himself.
H.E Jean-Christophe Peaucelle, the French Ambassador to Qatar, says: “We hope that many faculty, teachers and scholars interested in the French culture and language will come. After all, Moliere was so productive in writing and his pieces so studied at schools and universities around the world that the French language is also called “Molière’s language”.
Director Alice Safran is delighted with Total’s sponsorship for Molière’s extraordinary work and underlines the huge commitment it represents for her troupe “Théâtre de l’Oiseau-Tonnerre”: “We are a small team here in Doha, but we now have 8 actors who came from Paris for the show, and over 20 volunteers from Qatar who will act, play music and sing, as “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme” includes a lot of music and lyrics form the 17th Century. We have constituted an orchestra with music professors from the French Schools in Qatar and volunteer musicians from various nationalities. We are working hard to make these two evenings very unique.” Alice Safran aims at making it also a lot of fun as for families and friends. “Qatar National Theater is such a wonderful location, we are enthusiastic and very thankful about getting the opportunity to play there again”, she adds.
The show will take place at Qatar National Theatre at 8pm on May 30th and May 31st. Tickets (100 QR for Adults / 80 QR for Students) are on Sale at the French Institute of Doha and at Virgin.
