Dear Team,
This school year, the DIS Doha signed up again for the School Olympic Program to participate and defend our gold medal from last year in the handball competition.
The girls who joined the team were committed more than ever. All joined afterschool Handball AG on Thursdays, as well as meeting on Tuesdays during the 2nd break, to work and build up our team skills.
Everything looked really positive and we could all see a great team spirit building up with a high potential, as well as a growing impatience to play the first game. We cannot forget that the pressure on the girls after winning the gold medal 2 years in a row, was huge. We really wanted to win again and make our school proud.
Finally, the first game was announced. At the start of the game, everybody including myself was nervous, but we won, and we didn’t even lose a goal! The story repeated itself during the next games and we were on a winning roll.
Overall, we played 3 games scoring in total 20 goals and thanks to a strong defense and especially to our goalkeeper 0 goals were netted! We even played when the competition was scheduled during the February holidays. What a commitment from the players, which was very much appreciated from my side! Amazing!
We qualified for the semifinals! What a great effort it was, and we were so proud and happy!
Unfortunately, the rumors of the coronavirus going around appeared to be true. All schools sadly were shut down and all the competitions were cancelled. The dreams of bringing the medal home was shattered. Now more than ever we have to be patient and hope that everything will return back to normal so we can play again.
There is a lot of truth in saying “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” and I am confident that we will be even more committed if we get a chance to compete in the next school year.
I would like to personally share my huge gratitude to all the team members: Julia (goalkeeper), Sophia F., Belsam, Yasmina, Sarah, Alia, Sophia Z., Lina, Noha, Elin and Luana.
You are amazing and I am proud of you all. Even though we did not get a chance to fight for our medal, if I could, I would give you a medal of the gold colour for your big heart and commitment.
You are my superstars😊
