Nationwide Reading Day on November 17, 2023
(but for us already on November 16th because of the weekend …)
On November 17, 2023, the nationwide reading day took place for the 20th time in Germany. We at the DIS-Doha also love reading and didn’t want to miss out on this special day. However, it was brought forward to Thursday, November 16, due to the weekend.
Reading together and reading aloud connects and creates closeness. Reading encourages children to discover the world with curiosity – and is the key to their future.
Our ‘Reading Day’ was associated with various activities:
Almost every student at the DIS-Doha wrote a short statement about why reading is so important to them personally or which book they particularly like. These were then displayed for all to see in the main hall. Other classes decorated their classroom door in the form of a ‘book cover’ or came dressed up as their favorite book character. There were also ‘flash mobs’ with primary school children reading aloud in the secondary school, the teachers read to the children and the children read to other children.
The whole day was accompanied by the regular ringing of a bell. This then prompted the ‘drop everything and read a book’ and our students repeatedly read for 10 minutes during the lesson. Because: Reading unites!
