On November 2, 2023, Katara hosted a special event on the occasion of the International Day of the German Language, which offered a unique perspective on the importance of music and songs in the process of language acquisition. Our main goal was to highlight the role of songs as an effective and motivating tool in learning a foreign language.
To illustrate this, we started with a short theoretical part in which we outlined the basic steps of listening comprehension exercises in foreign language teaching: the so-called pre-, while- and post-listening activities. Pre-listening activities prepare learners for listening by providing context and motivation. While-listening activities allow learners to actively practice their listening comprehension. Post-listening activities are used to deepen understanding and reflect on the content heard.
The highlight of the event was the practical demonstration of this methodology through a live performance by the German International School Community Pop Choir. Through this performance, participants were able to experience the theory in action and realize how songs and music can not only facilitate but also enrich language learning.
The event was a vivid example of how music and language can complement each other and make learning a new language an enjoyable and enriching experience. We hope that participants were inspired by this experience to explore and learn the German language in a creative and musical way.
