Under the direction of Frau Hoffmann, students from classes 5 to 12 at the German International School in Doha have launched an extraordinary art project. Entitled “Common Walls – Art for Peace”, the young artists explored the significance of the Berlin Wall, a historic symbol of division, and transformed it into a powerful message of unity, peace and solidarity.
Aim of the project
The aim of the project was to not only understand the Berlin Wall as a historical dividing line, but to reinterpret it artistically. Through their creative work, the students were to express what terms such as peace, love, friendship and solidarity mean to them. The result is a colorful and vibrant work of art that speaks of hope and unity.
The creative process
1. Preparation of the wall:
First, the wall was primed in a neutral background color and divided into even segments. This gave each class its own area for design, while a gentle color gradient served as a connecting element.
2. Brainstorming:
In interactive workshops, students discussed the meaning of key topics and designed motifs, symbols and lettering. Popular elements included the peace sign, hearts, doves and slogans such as solidarity, peace and respect.
3. Design techniques:
From spray paints and stencils to acrylic paints and markers, the classes used a variety of techniques. The focus was on collaboration: transitional areas between the segments were designed together to symbolize the connections between the classes.
4. conclusion and reflection:
The project ended with a festive unveiling of the wall, during which each class presented their segment and explained the underlying ideas. A reflection session gave students the opportunity to talk about their experiences and the meaning of peace and solidarity.
A vibrant work of art for the community
The newly interpreted wall at the DIS Doha is more than just an art project – it is a strong sign that a symbol of unity and hope can arise from the traces of division. The colorful mural is not only an eye-catcher, but also a visible testament to the creative and collaborative power of our school community.
With “Common Walls – Art for Peace”, the students at the DIS Doha have proven how art can build bridges and overcome walls. This inspiring project will surely be remembered for a long time.
