On October 16, 2025, the German International School in Doha celebrated Day of German Unity under the motto “Freedom unites – Germany, Europe and the world”. The morning was all about community, creativity and reflecting on the meaning of freedom.
After the ceremonial start with the German national anthem (sung by the students of the classes 2 and 3) and the Qatari national anthem, our principal Herr Darmstädter opened the event in the Mainhall.
A highlight of the morning was the welcoming speech by the new German Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Oliver Owcza.
Afterwards, the pupils took part in a variety of workshops – from handicraft activities, escape rooms and simulation games to music, art and sports quizzes, poetry slams and role-playing games about the fall of the Berlin Wall. All activities offered creative and exciting approaches to the topic of freedom and impressively demonstrated how varied and lively learning is at DIS Doha.
A special part of the program was a workshop for class 10, which took place as part of the Multilateral Junior Academy on Global Challenges (MJA) recently initiated by Prof. Dr. Frank Himpel (Anhalt University of Applied Sciences).
This important initiative was launched by Professor Himpel at the German International School in Doha and is supported by renowned institutions, including the Qatar Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the UNESCO Regional Office in Doha, the German Embassy in Qatar, the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region and the knowledge platform InStrat.
The MJA brings together secondary school students from Qatar and Germany to take an in-depth look at the global challenge of climate change. The young participants deal with pressing issues around sustainability, water and energy – topics that are of crucial importance on both a local and global level. This enables a unique intercultural exchange and promotes mutual learning between young people who might otherwise never meet.
Finally, the school community gathered on our green field for a large peace photo: a powerful symbol of cohesion, peace and mutual respect. Afterwards, pretzels were waiting for the students, a pleasant end to an eventful day.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all the teachers and staff who made this special day possible through their organization and commitment – especially the organizational team Frau Dalipovic, Frau Cagirtekin, Frau Boumezbar and Herr Sauer as well as Herr Reichel for their organizational support.
A big thank you also goes to the administration, the janitors and the cleaning team, who contributed to the success of this day with great dedication.
